Let’s debunk some PR myths
The PR industry has a lot of misconceptions. We could have addressed them all in this article but that would have made a very long read so here’s our top three.
Myth: PR is just about writing and sending press releases?
Fact: PR is so much more than this. Yes press releases are useful if you have something newsworthy to announce to the media but it’s just one element of PR. PR is actually about creating a toolbox of tactics that form part of a wider integrated communications strategy.
Myth: Any publicity is good publicity?
Fact: Not strictly true, especially when it comes to dealing with issues or crises. The key is how you handle them. PRs are just as proud of all the stories you never got to read or hear about.
Myth: You can’t measure PR like advertising or marketing so it’s pointless to undertake.
Fact: In the past it was tricky but measurement has got a lot better. Examples include Google Analytics and monitoring engagement, reach, and sentiment of media coverage and social media posts. The key is to agree together, the metrics you want monitoring before the project begins.
