Why you need to celebrate Christmas in the summer
This might sound like a very bizarre thing to say, especially in the midst of various heatwaves, but you need to celebrate Christmas now but hear us out as to why.
In the PR industry, it’s a well-known fact that journalists start writing and finalising copy for Christmas in the summer months. That’s why we often term it ‘Christmas in July/August’. We’ve been involved in many press launches and events over the years where we’ve created showcases of new products and services right now for that year’s Christmas. The reason we do this is the long lead press i.e. the monthly magazines, work up to four months ahead, so if you don’t start engaging them in July or August you may well miss the boat (or should we say sleigh) for that year’s Christmas. So what tips can we give you to help with your Christmas planning?
- Christmas gift guides need photography
If you don’t yet have a lovely bank of photography assets and even better some which have a seasonal angle to them, then invest in photography now. Having photography assets might mean the difference between your product or service being included in a Christmas gift guide or not.
2. Identify new news angles
You might not have a new product or service launching especially for Christmas and you might be relying on something you have sold for years but that’s not the end of the world. Think of interesting facts, stats and angles that could convince a journalist to feature you.
3. Preparation, preparation, preparation
If you are working with a third party and need to seek copy or photography approvals we all know this can slow down processes and decision making so start pulling together your materials as early as possible to factor in a slower approval process.
4. Consistency of your messages
And make sure your other communications touch points such as your website, social media channels and e-newsletters are consistent with what you are telling and sending journalists. There’s nothing worse than if your price, stockist information and general information is incorrect. This will put them off from writing about you if you have mixed messaging.
